Detective Christina Perry
She has been with El Paso Sheriff’s Office for 9 years. She is an SVU detective, investigating cases involving children, at risk adults, and sex crimes. In January 2020 she was a detective in the financial crimes unit.
- Gannon’s investigation was all hands on deck.
- In 2020 she was assigned to look at social media looking for any little thing. She was looking on Facebook using an undercover Facebook profile used solely for investigative purposes and joining multiple groups searching for and discussing Gannon.
- She was present for some of an interview with Al Stauch but her main job at the time was watching the Facebook groups.
- Al called with more information and spoke to Detective Bethel; he had info about the Tiguan not being at the residence or the elementary school which was troublesome.
- Detectives were unable to locate the Tiguan. At 7:37 they searched Mesa Ridge High School.
- She went to the Colorado Springs Airport some time later to search for it because she had obtained the rental car there. Al told them about her rental. They searched short term, long term, and rental return areas. The Tiguan was not located.
- Perry also spoke to Harley, Letecia’s daughter. Detective Arndt tried to speak to Harley but she refused and would not go to the office to give information.
- At 10PM on January 28th 2020, Perry was at Gannon’s home. Detective Arndt, Ferrel, and Vigil were also there. Perry was doing scribe duties.
- She was responsible for transporting evidence.
- She was at the home for several hours; she spoke to Harley. She talked about her career aspirations and various things but she would refuse to talk about anything regarding her brother.
- A trash can in the back yard had a burned square of carpet inside, a different trash can in the back of the house had a candle with carpet fibers, a sock, and other items melted into the wax (defense objects, overruled).
- They took swabs from both shoes in a pair of black and white women’s Nike shoes in the garage, swabs of the light switch in the basement hallway outside of Gannon’s room and inside of Gannon’s room, swabs of Gannon’s bed on the east wall of the basement, more swabs of the bed, and swabs of the exterior side of Gannon’s door.
- Items are sealed until someone at the lab opens them.
- On January 29th 2020 she was waiting for Letecia to show up for an interview; she showed up much later after Perry had already left.
- She arrived in her VW Tiguan, the one they had been searching for. It had been freshly washed, there were water droplets on it on a dry day.
- Based on Letecia’s interview, Perry helped obtain another search warrant for the home.
- They canvassed dumpsters at the University shopping center because they were notified Letecia was seen at the PetCo in that center twice the day Gannon disappeared; they didn’t find anything in the dumpsters.
- Letecia rented a Nissan Altima. The prosecution says it was actually her aunt. Perry got a warrant to put a GPS on the vehicle due to concern she would flee to family out of state.
- A large amount of money had been transferred from Harley’s account to Letecia’s account - $2600.
- A family member of Letecia was posting on one of the Facebook pages.
- Perry became aware of the photo of Gannon in his bed with the red blanket with snowflakes on it. It had not been located during any search of the residence; a sheet with anchors on it and a pillow were also never found.
- They went to the El Paso County Transfer Station - the dump - and searched items that had been collected on or around the 27th.
- They found mail from addresses on Gannon’s street but nothing from the house.
- On January 24th, 2020 Perry was assigned to watch surveillance video from the neighborhood.
- Some cameras are motion activated, some record constantly. This particular neighbor’s recorded constantly, Perry watched it all searching for anything relevant to the investigation or would back up Letecia’s statements.
- There was no construction worker that went in or out of the residence.
- She points out the defendant as Letecia Stauch; Perry was familiar with what all of the members of the home looked like.
- Harley drove a white Volkswagen Jetta; Letecia had a black VW Tiguan, Al had a red Nissan Frontier.
- Letecia used Life360 on her phone; investigators were able to track Letecia’s locations based on this app.
- Exhibit 41 is a disc containing video footage from 6643 Manden drive on January 27th 2020 at 10:13 AM.
- There are two clips on the disc; it show’s Gannon’s house from a different residence. It shows a black Tiguan and a red truck.
- Exhibit 42 is more footage later in the day.
- In E42 you see people get out of the truck.
- E43 is a closer view.
- Exhibit 46 is another video showing Laina arrive home later in the day.
- Exhibit 47 is another video later when Harley returns home.
- Exhibit 220 is when the vehicle leaves the house on January 28th 2020.
- E41, clip 1 is played. It’s 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
- Letecia is seen getting into the Frontier and moving it from the street and backing it into the driveway. Gannon walks to the back of the truck.
- E42 clip 2 is played. It’s 3 mins 1 second.
- Perry took notes as she watched the video.
- At 10:13 AM Gannon gets into the back of the truck; they leave at 10:15 AM.
- At 2:20 PM they return home. Letecia steps out of the vehicle, a shadow is seen in the photo. It appears to be Gannon stepping out of vehicle too.
- At 2:35 PM you can see a shadow from the back passenger seat on the opposite side of the truck.
- Exhibit 42 is 7 mins, 17 seconds long.
- The Tiguan backs all the way into the garage at 2:24.
- 6626 Manden has different surveillance video.
- After the Tiguan backs into the garage, people cross the street, a car comes by.
- Exhibit 43 is zoomed in on the shadow outside of the Frontier, 2 minutes 43 seconds.
- You can see the leg drop more clearly at 2:24pm(?).
- At 3:11 PM (on the next disc) a school bus with Laina on it comes by.
- Exhibit 46
- Laina, wearing a backpack, walks up the driveway near the Frontier; people in the front yard of 6627 were working on the electrical box.
- Laina walks away from the front door to the sidewalk. She is outside for 19 minutes.
- Gannon and Letecia were in the home for one hour.
- You can see Laina ride away from the house on a bike.
- Exhibit 47 is Harley coming home at 4:27 PM and then she and Laina leaving at 4:51 PM.
- Exhibit 220 is two clips on January 28th - one at 8:13 of L leaving for the airport in her Tiguan, the other of Harley re-parking the Jetta - clip 2 is 3 minutes long.
- The Jetta was re-parking at 8:51 AM.
Cross examination
- At 10PM on January 28th, Perry arrived at the home. Other detectives were there as well as Laina and Harley.
- The defense asks how long Harley had access to the crime scene overnight with no authorities there; it’s unknown.
- There were utility workers on the street. They did not report hearing gunshots.
- Laina was seen on camera leaving the home on a bike and leaving with Harley but not seen coming back home in between.
Redirect
- Letecia called police just after 6pm.
- There are ways to muffle a gunshot; in other gun crimes it’s normal for some people to hear gunshots and others not to.
- They did not know Gannon was shot until his autopsy.
