Timeline
The Days Before
- Friday, Feb 11, 2000: School is closed because of a teacher work day. Asha & OB spend the day at their aunt’s home [Harold’s sister].
- Saturday, Feb 12, 2000: Asha has a basketball game at Burns Middle School. She is a point guard & fouls out towards the end of the game. They lose - theirs first loss of the season. She & her teammates are upset; crying. She perks up after a while. She and her mother stay to watch O’Bryant’s game as well. They return home.
- At some point, Asha attends a sleepover with about a dozen other cousins, hosted by 15 year old, Catina Degree.
- Feb 13, 2000: Asha is at home with her parents and brother, having attended church and having a meal with extended family earlier that day.
- 9:00pm: Around this time, a car hits a power pole and the area loses electricity.
The Disappearance: February 14, 2000
Note: The day Asha disappeared was also the 12 year wedding anniversary of Harold and Iquilla Degree.
- 12:30am The power is restored
- 12:30am Early articles & timelines place Harold’s check on the children at 12:30am.
- (Today, the accepted time appears to be 2:30am.)
- 2:30am Harold checks on Asha & O’Bryant; both are asleep in their bedroom.
- 2:30am Many early articles reference O’Bryant seeing Asha get out of bed to go to the bathroom and return to bed. Then “later” he hears her bed squeak. The earliest account, the 911 call, specified that O’Bryant heard nothing.
- 3:00am Asha allegedly gets dressed and packs her backpack, taking her two favourite outfits and leaves her house.[1] She does not take her coat despite the temperature being all of 34°F.
- 4:00am Asha is allegedly seen by several truckers walking along NC Highway 18, approximately a mile from her home. [1]
- 6:00am Iquilla wakes O’Bryant for school and discovers Asha is not in her bed. She searches the house, calls nearby family members to determine if Asha is with them.
- 6:39am Harold makes 911 call and reports Asha missing.
- 8:30am The official search for Asha begins at 3404 Oakcrest Drive and initially spans a radius of 3 sq. miles.
February 15, 2000
- 3:30am Cleveland County SD sets up a roadblock on NC 18 in hopes of finding people who regularly travel that section of highway at that hour. One person gave a third report of a sighting.
February 17, 2000
- Hair bows, a pencil, and candy wrappers found in the Turner’s Shed are identified as belonging to Asha
February 20, 2000
- Ground search is called off by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department.
August 3, 2001
- Just South of Laurel Haven Avenue professional grader, Terry Fleming, is clearing land for a driveway when he discovers trash bags on the site.
- Inside the bags, he finds a black & beige backpack with Asha’s name & phone number inside.
- He writes down the information, but it isn’t until he discusses the find with his wife, Regina, that she recognises Asha’s name & tells him to call the police.
- He alerts authorities on Friday, August 3. Mr. Fleming cooperated fully with all inquiries; he is not a suspect.
May 25, 2016
- The FBI releases new information to create awareness for National Missing Children’s Day.
May 24, 2024
- Cleveland County investigators tell the press they are, “making significant progress” to find out what happened to Asha Degree. [3]
Sep 10, 2024
- The FBI, SBI, and CCSO executed several search warrants at properties around Cleveland County. The properties appear to be owned by Mr. Roy Lee Dedmon and his wife, Connie. Mr. Dedmon is 80 years old at the time of this writing. His attorney has stated his client had no involvement, nor does he have any knowledge about the events surrounding Asha’s disappearance. He is said to have been interviewed by police, as have his wife and 3 daughters.
- YTCL expects to be able to obtain the affidavits in the near future.
